At Milan Design Week 2026, Interiors From Spain along with an interiors publication will reintroduce Appartamento Spagnolo within the historic walls of Palazzo Castiglioni. This year’s edition, curated by Studiopepe, unfolds as an immersive exploration of discovery. Spanish design meets Milanese Liberty architecture in a refined conversation of intimacy and identity.

Rooms flow one into another through permeable boundaries and shimmering metal-mesh curtains, dissolving traditional divisions to create intrigue instead of enclosure. Organic volumes, layered textures, and sculptural lighting create a sensorial narrative shaped by shadow and reflection. A palette of chocolate, coffee brown, pastel green and flashes of acid yellow ties together living, dining, bedroom, bath, installation, and outdoor settings. Each unveiling a curated selection of Spain’s most compelling furniture, ceramics, textiles and lighting. Below is a teaser:

Designed as a temporary home to wander through, Appartamento Spagnolo blurs past and present, intimacy and spectacle. A well-loved destination during Milan Design Week, here’s a snapshot of last year, curated by Calvi Brambilla Studio:

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the talented women driving innovation and creativity in the region’s design industry.

Sheikha Lateefa Bint Maktoum

As the founder and director of Tashkeel, Sheikha Lateefa bint Maktoum, is a force to be reckoned with in the UAE’s art and design space. Founded in 2008, Tashkeel is a hub for contemporary design. Under Sheikha Lateefa’s leadership, Tashkeel has developed into an enterprise that offers specialised and exclusive facilities for artists and designers in the UAE – nurturing a vibrant community of creativity.

Early works by Sheikha Lateefa, included public art projects and contributions to charity auctions, such as Médecins Sans Frontières and Noor Dubai’s Art for Sight auction. Her most recent endeavor, Gerbou is an immersive dining experience that celebrates Emirati identity while making a cultural statement. Through a contemporary perspective, the project showcases local agriculture and traditions. Gerbou is a collaborative effort between Kristina Zaniac Consultants, Tashkeel Studio, and a team of locally based designers. Sheikha Lateefa’s dedication to authenticity and sustainability is evident throughout the restaurant. She is a pioneer in the field of design simply due to her passionate and hands-on involvement in the project; her dedication and meticulous attention to detail made sure that every component fulfilled the highest requirements.

Khadija Al Bastaki

Khadija Al Bastaki, the Senior Vice President of Dubai Design District (d3), has played an integral role in shaping the creative landscape of design in the Middle East region. Under her leadership, d3 has developed into a global hub for creativity, start-ups, and multinationals. She has fostered an environment that has unified entrepreneurs and created a cohesive community driven by innovation within the region.

Khadija’s role in the d3 Architecture Exhibition was significant as she led the partnership with the Gulf chapter of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Not only did this collaboration strengthen d3’s position as an epicenter for architecture innovation but it also strengthened the company’s relationship with global architecture communities.

The industry has undergone a major shift as a result of Khadija’s innovative style. Her diligence and dedication have helped establish d3 as an institution of creativity, conceptual and unique designs. Her constant commitment raises the benchmark for design and architecture in the area, thus positioning the UAE as a pioneer in the world’s creative community.

Paris-based Lina Ghotmeh has garnered international acclaim for securing the commission to renovate the British Museum’s Western Range galleries. Renowned for designs that engage deeply with human experience and context, her work emphasizes material sensitivity and dialogue with history. While the final design is still in progress, initial renders envision soaring galleries with clerestory openings that bathe the interiors in natural light. A central exhibition space at ground level will provide visitor seating framed by arched openings, while tiered balconies will accommodate additional gallery displays. Inspired by Ghotmeh’s archaeological approach, textured, stone-hued surfaces will feature prominently in the redesign. Ghotmeh’s portfolio also includes the 2023 Serpentine Pavilion.

Aljoud Lootah is an acclaimed Emirati designer with a visionary approach to modern luxury. Based in Dubai, she leads Aljoud Lootah Design, a studio where traditional craftsmanship meets contemporary aesthetics in a harmonious fusion of innovation and elegance. The studio recently celebrated its 10th annivaersary.

The studio’s portfolio spans diverse design disciplines, including furniture, lighting and object design. Lootah’s masterful use of textures and materials distinguishes her work, resulting in the creation of sophisticated, one-of-a-kind pieces. Her recent Falaj collection, featuring sofas and tables, draws inspiration from the UAE’s verdant oases. These designs pay homage to the organic curves, separations and reconnections of falaj water streams – a modern tribute to nature’s fluidity. She also recently released a set of hand blown glass vessels as an addition to the collection called ‘Oases’.

Rooted in cultural heritage, Lootah’s design philosophy embraces a balance of tradition and experimentation.
Nada Debs’ work seamlessly blends heritage with innovation, creating pieces that tell stories of duality – where East meets West, craft intertwines with technology, and tradition embraces modernity. For her, design is not just about aesthetics, but about forging meaningful connections. “At its core, we are about duality – an interplay between contrasting worlds,” Debs explains. “This duality is not a tension but a dialogue: a conversation between heritage and innovation, East and West, craft and technology – creating a design language that is both timeless and contemporary.”

Looking ahead, Debs and her team are excited about the launch of their new space in Alserkal Avenue this spring, which promises to bring her vision to an even larger audience. “We are working on a new furniture collection called Bulbous, focusing on the carving technique,” she shares, also hinting at some secretive collaborations soon to be revealed. Debs’ dream project would be to design a boutique hotel, a venture that would allow her to expand her design language into a holistic, immersive experience. At the heart of Debs’ design process is her strong relationship with her craftsmen. “Our connection to our craftsmen is the source of our energy,” she says, acknowledging that this bond fuels both her and her team’s creative drive.

Laila Al-Yousuf is the co-founder and the design director of SAY Studio, which has recently expanded to Riyadh,KSA. Since its opening, the firm has produced impactful designs for high-profile clients including LinkedIn, Apple and Google. SAY Studio’s recent project with Deloitte’s headquarters spans eight stories that have been designed around the theme of “time,” giving the space a distinct personality. Under Laila’s leadership, the company has been transforming spaces with designs that are both aesthetically attractive and have been accredited by LEED and WELL.

Al-Yousuf is a passionate advocate of sustainability. In 2013, she conceptualized the ongoing Surge for Water “Design, Dine, Make a Difference” competition, to raise awareness about the water shortage in third world countries.Among SAY Studio’s proudest achievements in the past year is their work on Siemens Energy, a sprawling LEED Gold-certified campus spanning five buildings. “It challenged and inspired us in equal measure,” Design Director and Partner Laila Al-Yousuf says, highlighting the team’s ability to blend complexity, scale and sustainability. Beyond the projects themselves, she treasures the lasting impact their designs have on clients and the relationships built along the way.

Looking ahead, Al-Yousuf expresses a desire to design projects with a deeper emotional connection. “After suffering a late-term miscarriage, I was approached to design a high-risk pregnancy clinic. It was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career,” she shares. She dreams of pursuing similar projects for children’s, women’s or animal organisations, and even expresses an interest in set design – intrigued by creating spaces that delve into a character’s psyche.

Reem Al Qamzi, R.qitects

As founder and lead architect of her firm, Dubai-based R.qitects, Reem Al Qamzi’s design philosophy focuses on meaningful, timeless spaces that reflect cultural authenticity. “We believe in creating spaces that resonate with their users, blending local traditions with global influences to craft environments that are both personal and enduring,” she says.

As an Emirati architect growing up in a city that is constantly changing, Al Qamzi is excited for the future. “I feel like architecture in the UAE over the past few years has been greatly focused on the modern and the contemporary and on creating something very ‘different’,” she says. “But nowadays I find that a lot of the designs are going back to the fundamentals, back to contextualising architecture to the city’s heritage and culture but with a contemporary/modern aesthetic and in a manner that suits our times.”

While celebrating 10 years of design, R.qitects also won a highly commended award at the identity Design Awards 2024 for Villa OL – a villa where the paradigm of the traditional Arabic courtyard is explored and where climate and context ensure the courtyard plays a vital role, modulating internal private space and evoking the memory of ancient Arabic architecture.

Another standout project by Al Qamzi is the HMS Mirdif Hospital, completed in December 2021. This project was meticulously designed to meet international quality and safety standards, as well as global hospital regulations. At its heart, the design reflects a deep understanding of Emirati culture, emphasising hospitality and privacy.

When asked about a dream project she would like to pursue, Al Qamzi said she would like to design a nursery, school or hotel. Currently, she and her team are working on diverse projects to kick off the year, including a new hospital, a mosque that will begin construction soon and a new F&B outlet, as well as a luxury residence due to be handed over shortly. On being asked her what empowers her, the architect shares, “The ability to transform abstract ideas into tangible, meaningful designs empower me by giving me a deep sense of purpose and fulfilment. Knowing that through our work we impact and shape people’s lives – whether it’s through creating beautiful, meaningful spaces or inspiring designs – empowers me to keep going. I find empowerment in overcoming challenges with resilience and learning from every experience, as each hurdle strengthens my perspective and adaptability.”

The studio also designed Keturah, a luxury residential master development by MAG developers in District 7, MBR City. Drawing from the harmony of nature and the essence of wellbeing, Keturah reimagines modern living with a transformative approach that resonates deeply with today’s lifestyle needs. When asked what the studio’s design philosophy is, Wu shares that it revolves around creating spaces that shape how people feel, interact and grow. “From fostering spiritual connection to driving economic success, every project is a journey that begins with understanding and ends with meaningful impact,” she states.
Studio Baab is currently immersed in a range of exciting projects, each offering its own distinct narrative and design approach. Among them, two that stand out are: a Qatari-based café called OBLO, which is a celebration of wood in all its forms and its versatility through a minimalist design; and TWLV, an interconnection of concrete warehouses integrated with selective greenery, merging raw industrial elements with the contemporary. This past year, the studio has expanded into the Middle East, with projects across Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Oman.

On founder Ghida Chehab’s wish-list is to create a boutique hotel and to explore a furniture and product design collection. Chehab’s design philosophy is centred on creating warm, inviting spaces that reflect personal identity through thoughtful material choices. “I particularly love using wood in its various forms, as it adds both warmth and timeless beauty. Ultimately, a home should be a sanctuary – grounded, yet inspiring, where every detail fosters a sense of ease and individuality,” she shares.

On being asked what empowers her and her team, Chehab states, “What truly empowers us is the strong, supportive bond we’ve built as a team. This shared understanding and mutual respect allow us to navigate the complexities of design with confidence. We also believe in the power of balance between work and play. This harmony fuels not only our creativity but also the joy we find in the process. When work feels fun, it’s always refreshing, and that energy translates into every project we take on.”

These include a new international health and wellness centre envisioned as ‘an Eden of high-tech cosmetics’, F&B projects in Al Ain and Abu Dhabi and a select number of residential renovation projects in Dubai. She also was behind the new Nordic Homeworx showroom on Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai. Saied and her team have additionally completed a new F&B Concept in Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi, focused on building a community.

“We have a profound appreciation for the exceptional and the extraordinary, we constantly seek projects that push our creative limits, and we revel in the exquisite allure of genuine originality,” she shares. The studio’s design philosophy can be defined by designing in the tension that plays out between restrained, understated elegance, sensual attraction and the warmth of belonging. “Our creative journey begins with understanding context and history. This often drives our design narrative and guides us on how best we can weave this into a space,” Saied notes, adding that working in alignment with the studio values – which are defined by individuality, passion, discretion and intimacy – as empowering.

Artist Manal AlDowayan bears witness to the position and representation of women on a global and local scale. Renowned for her participatory practice that brings together women from across Saudi Arabia, AlDowayan creates powerful moments for interaction and community. Navigating and documenting the changing cultural landscape of her homeland, the artist is perfectly positioned to represent Saudi Arabia at this year’s Venice Biennale. Shifting Sands: A Battle Song was commissioned by the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Culture’s Visual Arts Commission and is curated by Jessica Cerasi and Maya El Khalil and assistant curator Shadin AlBulaihed.

The Edge of Arabia exhibition

Shifting Sands: A Battle Song amplifies the voices of Saudi Arabian women on an international scale. For the project, AlDowayan held three workshops in Al Khobar, Jeddah, and Riyadh. Participants of all ages were invited to join group singing lessons led by the artist and Ileana Yasmin, a vocal coach for the Music Commission within the Ministry of Culture in Riyadh. The women were asked to consider their representation in the context of the international media and to write about and illustrate their perceptions of each other. The result is a highly personal meditation on identity within a global context. The illustrations, texts and songs created in the workshops will be incorporated into the installation. The work is an expression of self-determinism and a document of collectivity.

AlDowayan is well known for her artworks that foreground the collaborative voices of women. For example, in 2023, she presented From Shattered Ruins, New Life Shall Bloom at the Guggenheim, New York. This piece contained a collection of porcelain scrolls annotated with text sourced from popular culture, media, and literature, that evidence the oppression of women. The work was activated when visitors were called upon to observe and then crush the porcelain objects. The words and their significance were destroyed, leaving space for new narratives to be written. Suspended Together (2011) contains 200 fiberglass dove sculptures. Each flightless bird has a permission to travel document written across its body. The documents were submitted by leading women from Saudi Arabia. The document is issued by an appointed male guardian and must be carried by every female regardless of age or position. In such works, AlDowayan creates powerful opportunities for understanding and action.

AlDowayan’s contribution to the Venice Biennale promises to be an evocative experience that celebrates visibility and autonomy. In a statement, the artist explains, “Shifting Sands: A Battle Song is a call for solidarity in the context of the global representation of women in and from Saudi Arabia, and a rally to take ownership of our identity as we navigate both the physical space we inhabit and the narratives that have historically defined us.”

What does the upcoming edition of the fair hold for visitors?

The Downtown Design 2023 fair is a special milestone edition as we celebrate our 10th edition. A decade acting as an active catalyst for design, forging meaningful connections across the industry and creative community, with a focus on quality, contemporary design and fostering opportunity.

The 2023 fair will bring together a roster of some of the world’s most known and established names alongside innovative design studios and craftsmen, making their debuts in the region, providing visitors with a diverse and inspiring array of design from around the world. With fresh design revelations, spotlighting regional talent, showcasing international collectives and independent designers and small studios from all corners of the globe making their debut to this region. Complimented by a strong line-up of creative features and pop-up exhibitions, events and activities and a star-studded talks programme to mark the anniversary, this year promises to be exceptional.

What is the central theme of the fair this year? How have brands adapted to the theme or working with it?

This year, for the 10th edition, we are introducing a thematic experience that pays tribute to the beauty and necessity of our natural surroundings, bringing elements from the outdoors indoor through the fair’s uniquely devised visitor flow that weaves references from nature through displays of various regional and international participants. The theme focuses on the principle natural elements such as the sea, sky, earth, and lush abundant landscapes in the public spaces of the fair. The Veuve Clicquot Lounge uses the sea as its central design concept and features a pop-up oyster bar on the terrace. The Forum iterates a cloudscape concept that looks up to the skies. Designed by Fadi Saridienne, the Café by 1Life, looks towards the earth for inspiration with its soil and plantation.

With this narrative running through the 10th edition of the fair, Downtown Design aims to generate dialogue and emphasize how natural materials and the great outdoors, can be ever-present and an integral part of our lives, both for the betterment of the planet and for our everyday wellbeing.

Upon entry into the fair, visitors will be met with diverse showcases. One of the first showcases is from Cosentino. A sense of serenity is evoked with the brand’s roman bath concept realized by designer – Kristina Zanic and her team. The concept was created with Dekton Pietra Kode, a carbon neutral collection designed for Cosentino by Daniel Germani, and seamlessly features steps, pillars, flooring and pool in a harmonious composition – to the central fair area featuring outdoor concepts by Flexform, Ethimo, Jwana Hamdan and Grassitup.

Who are some of the new and exciting entrants this year at the fair?

We have an array of globally renowned brands joining us this year such as Dedar, Flexform, Kartell and MillerKnoll, and Apparatus, who I am personally a fan of. Another new key exhibit we are excited to share is F.A.M.E Collective (Female Artist of the Middle East), who will be presenting limited edition works by artists such as Carla Baz, Naqsh Collective, Karina Sukar and Talin Hazbar.

The Bowery Company is making their debut with a selection of Danish brands such as Audo Copenhagen, Ferm Living, Norr11, 101 Copenhagen and a Dutch brand – FEST Amsterdam, whose founder – Femke Furnee, started the company at the age of 27 when she couldn’t access the type of furniture she would like at a price point she could afford. Furnee will be attending the fair and will participate in a panel discussion around accessibility and manufacturing collections, also touching on the topic of building a brand that breaks boundaries. The fair’s dedicated section for collectives, individual designers and studios, titled – Downtown Editions, is back this year introducing creatives from all corners of the world. The lineup this year includes Edward Linacre (Australia), Akar de Nissim (Singapore), Fadi Saridienne (Dubai-based) and Don Tanani (Egypt). We have a lot of collectives and collaborative showcases this year, which is very exciting and will really provide an an intro and for the industry and public visitors. One of the examples is ‘Anatolia’, a collective exhibition of contemporary design talent from Turkey, reflecting the region’s unique mix of ancient and modern influences staged by the curatorial team of Isola Design. Another example is a showcase of Dutch design talent, curated by Margriet Vollenberg, which will feature a line-up of limited-edition and handmade works by creatives from the Netherlands.

How was sustainability integrated within the fair? Any key brands working on the same with Dubai Design Week?

We have already implemented a number of sustainable initiatives such as not using single-use materials, using only existing infrastructures to build, recycling all its own waste, implementing solar energy to generate power and has gone digital with fair collateral, including invitations and catalogues.

Downtown Design showcases several brands and design studios who are at the forefront of innovation and exploration of the usage of circular economy materials and manufacturing. Through a series of talks and panel discussions, hosted at The Forum in Downtown Design, the fair provides a dynamic stage for interaction and dialogue around sustainability and ethical practices in the design industry. Featuring leaders from international and regional design scene, the opening keynote will be given this year by Lidewij Edelkoort – who is a renowned profile in the industry when we talk about sustainable practises.

Highlighting great creative talent from the region and beyond, Dubai Design Week provides a platform for both emerging and established designers, architects, educators, companies and all creative practitioners alike and this year’s programme will feature large-scale outdoor installations with a focus on how design, science and technology can converge to reclaim materials of our past, as well as reimagine new forms that foster sustainable practices. Visitors can explore immersive public interventions made from materials such as loofah and sugar and repurposed bamboo, with large-scale 3D printed architecture installation at the forefront.

The Abwab commission returns this year and will explore the use of palm tree stands as a prime example of a sustainable resource in architecture, while Urban Commissions will highlight the UAE’s design-conscious urban development goals with this year’s winning project which utilises recycled bio -plastic derived from renewable resources. Both projects will be staged and unveiled at Dubai Design Week in d3 in November.

Which countries have the highest number of participants joining the fair? Has it changed from last year?

The largest representation in origins of exhibiting companies remain from the UAE, Italy and Spain – what has really changed in comparison to last year is a variety of new countries that have been underrepresented in the past, e.g. The Netherlands, Colombia, Denmark, Singapore, Australia, South Korea and Taiwan.

Which brands have returned to the fair? And how are they working with the fair to implement a unique outlook?

Returning exhibitors include; Huda Lighting, who has a whole section (350 sqm) in the fair this year, where they are showcasing Lodes, Italamp, Bomma, Masiero, Slamp, Panzeri and Penta Light – all really great brands. Kohler will launch a new product presented in a design concept by Nada Debs. Cc-tapis, Jaipur Rugs, Illulian, Poltrona Frau and Cassina are back with standalone showcases. Some of the other brands include – La Nena Home, Lasvit, THG Paris, Ethimo, Jwana Hamdan together with Purity and Serip, MODU, spearheaded by Omar Al Gurg. Sharjah-based 1971 – Design Space, are this presenting this year, an experiential installation by the talented Neda Salmanpour.

Binchy & Binchy are back this year with Innofab45 this time, presenting innovative pieces using 3D printing technologies and materials. Eatablished Lebanese (UAE-based) designer Fadi Sarieddine Design Studio will launch a limited edition collection composed of pieces carved from stone and wood – it has been a few years since Fadi was present in the fair so we are thrilled to have him back onboard, and Douxteel from Taiwan who also exhibited pre-COVID, are now back for their second edition.

What can we expect from Design Talks? Will there be any specific section dedicated to COP28?

The Forum will be designed by Intercon (spearheaded by Mohammed Adib) and will, as in recent years, be very much in a modular format and provide an intimate setting that promotes dialogue between speakers and participants, to really provide a platform for active discussion for the industry and the community.

We have a very strong line up of prominent profiles from the region and the international creative stage joining this year, marking our 10th edition.

Designed by Aleeya Khan from A* alittlemore studio

Any specific regional programs for students or local talents?

This year a roster of designers from the UAE are participating with fascinating and innovative projects. The specific collective titled – UAE Designer Exhibition will present works by over 25 UAE-based creatives, themed around the future of living spaces, and with a focus on materiality and social impact.

Regional highlights include an experiential installation by the talented Neda Salmanpour, presented by Sharjah-based 1971 – Design Space. Renowned designer Fadi Sarieddine Design Studio will launch a limited-edition collection composed of pieces carved from stone and wood. Local design incubator, Tashkeel, will unveil the culmination of the 2023 Tanween Programme cohort, continuing the focus on sustainability and addressing the fundamental challenges facing the world today. The event lineup includes Wafa Al Falahi, Marwa Abdelrahim, Maryam Elattar & Mohamed Elnaggar and Chinara Tashmatova. Throughout the Dubai Design Week exhibitions and installations visitors can explore projects by prominent names such as Abdalla Almulla (MULA Studio), who was awarded the Arab Design Award by the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris earlier this month (September) in the Emerging Talent category. Waiwai – the firm that represented the UAE at the Venice Architecture Biennale will also be featured at the event alongside budding creative talent such as artist & Designer, Areen Hassan, who engages with Islamic art as part of her practice, and architect AlZaina Lootah, one of the strong emerging UAE talent to watch.

Which sectors (hospitality/retails/residential) do you see massive interest from the participants side?

Connection is at the heart of everything we do; tethering design professionals with commercial opportunities in a sought-after and fast-growing market. We have seen from the B2B visitors of Downtown Design, as well as the Trade/Connect programme participants (Downtown Design’s bespoke trade programme) – a strong engagement across all three sectors: hospitality, retail, as well as residential. However, the recent boom in the region has resulted in a heightened interest in hospitality and residential projects in the past year with nearly all trade visitors showing involvement in some aspect of these projects, whether it is design or product sourcing. Generally, participants in Downtown Design have a variation of objectives for exhibiting in the fair and for the layers of commercial opportunity they seek. These goals depends on their set up locally and in the region, as well as the way they operate markets and globally. We work in very close dialogue with our exhibitors and know that most are keen to connect with the residential and hospitality sectors from the UAE and the wider region, with key profiles predominantly being interior designers, architects and property developers.

Hobnail Tapas from Anna von Lipa

The heightened interest in these sectors reflects their growing significance across the region due to the rapidly evolving landscape and projects that push design boundaries, with Downtown Design being the pivotal point of connection to fostering meaningful relationships between the exhibitors and the key players.

Any special guests or collaborations you can talk about?

There are a number of people I am excited to have coming to the fair this year. It’s a long list really but some stand out names are – Lidewij Edelkoort, of course! – Nina Magon, Arthur Mamou-Mani, David/Nicolas, Adam Nathaniel Furman, Pilar Zieta, Ozwald Boateng and Kelly Hoppen are coming back this year, too!

How is this edition of the fair different from the previous editions of the fair and how was it developed?

The 2022 edition of Downtown Design was really a step up thus far, in terms of brands exhibiting, the curation aspects of the fair as well as the visitor journey. This year, we had tightened our guidelines and curation criteria, and implemented new elements for the overall visitor experience. That I think will not go unnoticed at the fair – and we strive to continue to emphasize points of improvements every year from here on, and work closely with all exhibitors and participants to ensure a refreshed flow and journey for exhibitors, and a point of discovery, in all upcoming editions.

Dutch Collective – what can we expect from the specific space? Any standout materials that they are designing with and if so, why?

The Dutch collective will be presented within the Downtown Editions section of the fair, and feature works by Milla Novo, FEMM Amsterdam, Studio Kalff, Atelier Ruben van Megen, and Timothy van Oorschot. Visitors will discover a very colourful presentation and a very explorative use of materials; rope interwoven with metallic elements, vintage glassware reborn as enchanting lighting fixtures, repurposed desert sand made into functional furniture.

In addition to the natural finish, the series also features a textured ‘R11’ finish, designed for use outdoors or in settings subject to continual stress.

The 2020 collection from Villeroy & Boch is true to the brand’s philosophy: ‘The Art of Simplicity’. Understated yet striking, the high-quality ceramic tiles fit any interior scheme – whether natural, urban, modern or timelessly classical. The Alta tile range is defined by its quartzite glimmer and artisanal relief finish, while the Rocky.Art wall and floor concept combines natural stone and concrete with abstract floral designs such as opulent hydrangea blossoms in nuances of yellow and green.

One of Italy’s leading architect’s latest launch with REVER is giving back to the community amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Marco Piva has released his latest collection with the outdoor furniture company, the Versiilia collection. As part of efforts to help the community, REVER is donating a portion of the revenue to the Italian Red Cross.

To help the country amidst the current adversity the country is experiencing due to COVID-19, REVER has announced it will be donating 10 per cent of the revenue to the charity for every product that is sold online.

The latest collection from Piva is inspired by a journey travellers take along the coast of Tuscany, the collection exudes the calm nature of the still sea.

Piva uses a mixture of textures in the collection including cloths, metals and ropes, infusing earthy and muted tones in the furniture which perfectly blend with the outside world.

The viareggio sofa, armchair and pouf create the perfect balance between bold and understated. The blues and greens used and the clean lines in the designs create a relaxing atmosphere.

Meanwhile the other six designs by the president of the identity Design Awards jury, offer a more muted colour palette. The forte dei marmi sofa, the pietrasanta chairs and the pietrasanta stools all incorporate ropes into their designs, as well as metals which gives the pieces a contemporary twist.

Similarly metals are also mixed into the designs of the coffee table viareggio and coffee table dei marmi, with latter having a more granite finish and the former more of a marble finish.

All of the materials and colours used a mean to “harmonise with different outdoor spaces — the sea, lake, mountains and exclusive yachts”.

For every piece bought a portion will be donated to help those worst affected by coronavirus in Italy.

This piece was originally published in the April 2020 issue, which you can read for free here.

The new focus for interiors is the use of natural materials and patterns that are inspired by the beauty of nature, from canyons to deserts, replicated in furnishings and accessories by twisting shapes, fabrics with graceful patterns and strikingly material, pigmented surfaces. These surfaces are transformed with new finishes – soft, matt or polished – and are able to adapt to different styles, from vintage to industrial, and from modern to maximalist.

Colour can be one of the simplest and most effective routes to creating an inspiring environment. Colour determines the atmosphere of a home and expresses the personality of the people who live in it. So, when making a change in our everyday lives, the colour of our home is a good place to start.

Benjamin Moore

Benjamin Moore revealed its Colour of the Year 2020 as First Light 2102-70 – a soft, rosy hue. “We selected First Light 2102-70 as our Colour of the Year 2020 to represent new dawn of idealism, design and living,” explains Andrea Magno, Benjamin Moore’s Director of Colour Marketing and Development. “First Light 2102-70 reflects a new definition of the home – a shift in mindset from the material to satisfying the core needs in life: community, comfort, security, self-expression, authenticity and ultimately optimism.” It’s one of ten colours the brand has selected to guide us into the next ten years and beyond.

Jotun

Meanwhile, Jotun has unveiled its 2020 Colour Design under the theme of ‘Celebrating Colours’ – 12 new colours matched with eight timeless hues. “Each colour conveys a deeper meaning, helping to create an environment that will enable people to thrive,” says Rana Khadra, Colour and Creative Manager at Jotun Middle East, India and Africa. For example, Serene Blue evokes the freedom of the sea.

Novacolor

Also emphasising serenity is Novacolor, which endorses a ‘joyful revolution’ in its new collection – to restore harmony and balance in social spaces. Novacolor has been an active and constant player in this global movement for several years, not only through its communication campaigns but also through its ongoing commitment to transforming production using biomass raw materials, and studying products that are not only sustainable but also functional – linked to well-being and awareness.

No less innovative or sustainable are Wallpepper’s designs. The brand’s new H2O system is the result of careful technical research to bring artworks to areas that are in contact with running water or have high humidity levels. The technical fabrics, which are PVC-free, are also are breathable and water-resistant.

Piazza from From Lighting

Deep technological research, a poetic approach, rigorous aesthetics and keen attention to detail are also the key elements of From Lighting, a new independent lighting brand that offers high-quality products produced in Italy.

Piazza is a magnetic wall lamp that’s designed to move freely on the surface of a metal board, according to the user’s needs. The aluminium head can be rotated through 360 degrees and its intensity adjusted. Available in different colours and shapes, Piazza gives great sculptural impact to its architectural environment.

Halo Wall by Martín Azúa for Vibia

“Halo explores the limits between the light and the lamp’s diffuser until it becomes a unified whole,” says Martín Azúa of his wall light, which provides a series of minimalist light sculptures. The result is suggestive ambient lighting that floats over the wall while at the same time bathing it with light. The Halo Wall, meanwhile, is a light rod that is one metre long.

The material becomes transformed into an emerging light in a magical way. “With Halo, I wanted to bring light closer to people, so that it would accompany them. Although… behind this proximity there’s a complex technical project,” says Azúa.

Oop’s by Ingo Maurer is a strip of paper pinned to the wall, whose light source is hidden in the lower end. It combines the spontaneous expression of the ready-made with a very appealing curved shape and a pleasant light that falls through paper.

The last few years have given us bold colours and patterns in rugs and carpets, but this year will see more earth-toned, neutral colours with monochromatic designs in patterns and textures. There is also a big push toward the idea of longevity. Hand-crafted, custom rugs have always been made this way, by artisans well-versed in skills passed down through generations; what’s new is that homeowners are beginning to care a lot more about that than they did formerly.

Rugs by Illulian are characterised by the use of top-quality wool and silk and an extremely complex hand-crafted process: they can be made to measure for homes, hotels, museums, showrooms, restaurants and boats. Colourful and textured, the most exclusive line is the Platinum 120, while the Design collection features geometric elements that create an optical illusion, or tone-on-tone effects in soft relaxing shades. These are designed to have a three-dimensional decorative effect.

Also based on a geometric format is the Nomadismi rug collection. Every rug is defined as “a landscape reconstructed with reclaimed pieces that lived another life somewhere else.” Stitching is an important feature, as is the decision to bring the past back to life in some way by reusing portions of old natural hemp fabrics. These have been dyed in new colours, joined together using woollen yarn and decorated with tassels to produce a new rug, ready for a new life.

Grace from Pappelina

Also made with passion, tradition and craftsmanship are Pappelina’s rugs. Its focus on developing new colours and patterns has elevated the classic Swedish plastic rug to a whole new level.

Narrow Stripe Icon from Kasthall

Long-forgotten yarns, leftover dyes and historical patterns inspired Kasthall Design Studio to create its new Colors In Between collection. “We were reminded of the design language that came out of the Bauhaus school, which celebrated its centenary last year, and have been inspired by their love of pattern. We have also drawn on the 1980s feel of the Memphis Group’s designs, not to mention Kasthall’s own Arkad pattern from that period,” says Lena Jiseborn, Design Director at Kasthall.

Planier Pinède by André Arbus for La Manufacture Cogolin

La Manufacture Cogolin’s new collaboration is also inspired by the past – In this instance with the French decorator André Arbus, considered the leader of the traditional revival movement during the 1930s. The result is five rug designs with geometric designs, emblematic of Arbus’ work, and surprising re-editions of lesser-known designs using cord patterns.

The definitive ‘anti-chair’, Zanotta’s Sacco appeared in 1969 and was developed at a time when architects and designers began to reflect on the importance of ergonomics and the demand for a universal chair capable of adapting to all users. An innovation, a provocation, a revolution, Sacco was “a concept, not a shape”. Today, in our nomadic homes and hybrid work and living spaces, Sacco is just as modern as ever.

Doze by Anderssen & Voll for Muuto

Also iconic is the Doze lounge chair by Muuto, which arose from a desire to create a design referencing both the 1970s and Scandinavia. Designed by Anderssen & Voll, with slender legs in embedded steel for lightness, and a large back and soft seat, it perfectly encapsulates the ‘golden age’ of Danish design and can be augmented with the addition of the Doze ottoman.

Kew by Rodolfo Dordoni for Molteni&C

Rodolfo Dordoni’s Kew design for Molteni&C is a set of small round tables in which the presence of metal combined with other materials recalls the large metal Victorian greenhouses at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew, London. The apparently simple metal frame conceals small structural refinements such as the slightly inclined base that conceals the built-in feet. The central plinth, into which the top is inserted, is cone-shaped. The tabletop is thick and consists of two different materials.

Gau by Ibon Arrizabalaga & Silvia Ceñal for Treku

The Gau table, available in different sizes and finishes, is the work of designers Silvia Cenal and Ibon Arrizabalaga and is a simple yet elegant circular coffee table that suits most living areas.
