Born in Germany’s legendary Black Forest, the 333-year old luxury kitchen brand has been crafting professional-grade home appliances using a triptych of world-class materials, innovation and craftsmanship– of the 840 processes involved in assembling their refrigerators, 813 are by hand, and their iconic 90 cm wide ovens have been assembled by hand for over 30 years.

This year, they were fortunate to be able to present the Leeway seating collection for their Geiger collection – designed by our id Awards Juror Keiji Takeuchi – to the region during the awards. Sleek and elegant, it’s the company’s most varied seating line. Leeway is Takeuchi’s first solo project with Geiger, though he played an important role in the development of Geiger’s Saiba line working as part of designer Naoto Fukasawa’s studio.
Allowing freedom of movement within Leeway’s minimal footprint was an important design consideration for Takeuchi. The range of motion allowed by most side chairs is defined by the space between armrest supports. With Leeway’s crescent-shaped, cantilevered backrest, which attaches only to the back legs, users are given a place to rest elbows while being free to spread out and move naturally as they sit to collaborate or socialize.
‘My work was not done until people were happy to sit on them’, Takeuchi explained, ‘If people have any hesitation choosing my chair over something else, that means something is missing’.
The Leeway Seating family is available in bar- and counter-height stools as well as side chairs, to create a clean, uniform aesthetic throughout a space. Leeway Chairs come in all-wood, or with metal frames and a choice of wood or polyurethane seats and backrests. Chairs with metal frames can be stacked three-high. GamFratesi explains, ‘The Design Post space is a combination of shared areas and private showrooms. The idea was to create a system that clearly identified Kvadrat from the outside through the use of fabric. The flexible system offers two solutions for different activities: private for meetings and work, or more open during the different events’.
The novelties presented here were San by Louise Sigvardt, Melange Nap by Akira Minagawa, Instill by Maharam, as well as Mingled Plaid and Segmented Stripe designed by Paul Smith for Maharam.
