Tribute to Karl Lagerfeld

Paris remembers the late fashion designer.

The Grand Palais in Paris was the site of an industry’s salute to the iconic fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld. Known for his signature white ponytail, dark glasses and black gloves, the German-born, Paris-based creative director of Chanel and Fendi proved to be a constantly evolving force in the fashion and design worlds until his death in February.

Fifty-six giant portraits taken throughout his life lined the walls in his favorite colors – black and white, enhanced with a touch of red. Videos, personal testimonials and live performances wove a tapestry of the life of the multi-talented and multi-faceted man. The 2,500 admirers included actresses Tilda Swinton, Fanny Ardant, Cara Delevingne and Helen Mirren who read excerpts from some of his favorite authors.

In recognition of his favorite dance, the tango, seventeen Argentinian tango dancers performed to a seven-piece orchestra from Buenos Aires. Celebrated pianist Lang Lang, who played on the grand piano designed by Lagerfeld for the 150th anniversary of Steinway, and American artist Pharrell Williams also on stage to pay homage to their friend.

The exceptional event paid tribute to an exceptional man who will be missed.
