JD Malat Gallery in the UAE

Where art meets design and emotion

JD Malat Gallery marks a defining first year in the UAE, reflecting a shift in contemporary collecting where design, space, and emotional resonance shape every choice. Founded in 2018 by Paris-born curator and art dealer Jean-David Malat, the gallery represents international artists across disciplines, with established spaces in Mayfair, London, and Downtown Dubai. The expansion into Dubai supports both emerging and established voices, with exhibitions and fairs designed to integrate art seamlessly into lived and architectural spaces.

The decision to open in Dubai grew from a recognition that “the centre of gravity for collectors, artists, and cultural ambition was expanding beyond traditional Western hubs,” he said. By early 2025, the gallery launched in Downtown Dubai, connecting with existing clients and fostering dialogue around how art, architecture, and design intersect in everyday life.

As collecting moves into 2026, Malat notes a fundamental change in mindset. “Collecting is becoming less about accumulation and more about meaning,” he commented, highlighting a growing focus on identity, experience, and emotional connection rather than speculation. Collectors in the UAE demonstrate “the depth of curiosity and emotional intelligence” Malat said, choosing works that inhabit space, transform interiors, and enhance daily life. “Collectors are not buying works simply to store or speculate; they are living with them,” he added, emphasising scale, presence, and materiality as key to how art is experienced.

This approach informs the gallery’s curatorial vision. Exhibitions are immersive and layered, designed to resonate both visually and spatially. Shows such as Kojo Marfo’s exploration of hybridity and ancestry, and Tim Kent’s investigations into abstraction and material presence, reflect audiences navigating multiple cultural and visual worlds. In Dubai, exhibitions unfold as lived, social moments, aligning art with interior design and architectural contexts.

Looking ahead, the 2026 programme brings a series of exhibitions and projects that build on the gallery’s vision, offering collectors new ways to engage with art, design and space. The year opens with Elements of Light, featuring RETNA, Casper Brindle and Santiago Parra. On 9 February, music legend and acclaimed photographer Bryan Adams returns for a #SHOTBYADAMS book signing, followed by solo shows from Luis Olaso and Conrad Jon Godly. During Art Dubai, the gallery presents major works by Masayoshi Nojo, before Made in UAE spotlights artists living and working locally, placing their voices firmly within a global dialogue.

“Collect what genuinely moves you, what you want to live with every day. Emotional connection always outlasts market noise,” Malat remarked. Guided by this, JD Malat Gallery continues to shape a cultural landscape where art, design, and architecture converge.
