Roar crafts the PIF Daycare Centre in Riyadh with a calming, sensory-rich environment where design, nature and childhood development come together.
In Riyadh’s King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) the only LEED Platinum-certified mixed-use district a new landmark has quietly emerged. Commissioned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), the PIF Daycare Centre designed by Roar offers a nurturing, sensory-rich environment where children aged nought to three can truly flourish. Recently awarded LEED Gold certification, the centre reflects Roar’s belief that the right environment can shape a child’s formative years.

Drawing on the Montessori philosophy and inspired by neuroarchitecture, the design fosters social, cognitive, motor, and language skills through spaces that encourage curiosity, comfort, and a sense of belonging.
“Inspired by neuroarchitecture, which recognises how spaces can deeply impact behaviour and emotions, we have created an environment where every element is tailored to nurture curiosity, comfort, and a sense of belonging,” says Pallavi Dean, Founder and Creative Director of Roar.

Natural materials like sustainable wood, cotton fabrics, and bamboo provide a tactile backdrop for exploration, while furniture with soft, rounded edges ensures safety and invites engagement. “Our goal was to create an interior that resonates with children and stimulates all their senses,” Dean adds.
“The use of earthy tones, organic shapes, and natural textures compose a calming palette that soothes and promotes a peaceful atmosphere conducive to learning and exploration.”
Technology is integrated thoughtfully, with interactive digital tools complementing hands-on learning. At the same time, outdoor spaces connect seamlessly with the interior, encouraging physical activity and engagement with water, plants, and other natural elements that enhance creativity and motor skills.
The centre is more than classrooms or play areas; it is a carefully orchestrated environment where every space has a purpose. Flexible classrooms accommodate both individual and group activities, a cosy library invites reading and storytelling, and a sleep room ensures restful naps.
Facilities for mothers and staff provide comfort, recognising the importance of supportive spaces for caregivers as well.

“This project showcases our belief that design should go beyond aesthetics,” Dean explains. “It’s about creating environments that are nurturing, inspiring, and sustainable spaces that can make a lasting impact on a child’s life.”
With its holistic approach, attention to detail, and seamless integration of nature, technology, and pedagogy, the PIF Daycare Centre sets a new benchmark for early childhood education, proving that thoughtful design can shape not just spaces, but the very beginnings of a child’s journey in the world.
