Design Take: The latest Desert Pool Villas at Bab Al Shams

With private courtyards and sleek design, the Desert Pool Villas at Bab Al Shams offers an immersive desert experience.

Bab Al Shams is unveiling its latest resort addition, the Desert Pool Villas, a collection where nature harmoniously meets refined hospitality. Inspired by the Bedouin way of life, these villas, also known as “Sands of Serenity,” were conceptualised by architect Jonathan Ashmore of ANARCHITECT with interiors designed by Delfina Cortese of Delfina Design, and managed by Kerzner International.

Bab Al Shams’ signature architecture draws inspiration from ancient Persian villages known for their courtyard homes and natural harmony with the environment, allowing for a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor spaces.

When asked about the architectural vision behind the villas, Executive Vice President of Design & Technical Services at Kerzner International, Hakan Ozkasikci said, “When we decided to add off site individual units that would not be connected via porticos or courtyards, we decided to go bold and reinterpret a desert habitat that would be an innovative complement to Bab Al Shams.”

The Desert Pool Villas architecture draws inspiration from traditional Arabian fortified villages, embodying the spirit of the Arabian desert. The villa design is positioned to emerge naturally from the undulating dunes, effortlessly complementing the desert landscape whilst also creating shade from the harsh sunlight, keeping interiors cool. The rooms are arranged in blocks with adobe walls and are interspersed by palms and native ghaf trees and connected by winding pathways with water features reminiscent of the region’s traditional falaj irrigation system. Overall, the villa experience is a culturally rich one that balances beauty, functionality, and harmony with nature.

“Our response was an architecture that would be in sync with this natural geometry and create a private environment with uncompromising luxurious volumes that would be discreet upon approach.” said Ozkasikci.

This collection comprises eight one- and two-bedroom villas, each nestled within the dunes to offer complete privacy and an ideal escape for guests. With their raw grandeur and calming aesthetics, the villas invite guests to retreat into nature’s embrace. The villa suites, in a pale colour palette, exude a light, fresh, and minimalist feel, accented by teal, mustard, and softly lit alcoves.

Each villa features a spacious bedroom, a large bathroom with an outdoor shower, an infinity pool, and private service access. Sky Oculus, a key architectural feature, allows guests to stargaze and immerse themselves in the space, seamlessly blending the interior and exterior for a boundless feel.

Families and friends can gather comfortably around the outdoor firepit, while the villas offer a well-balanced indoor-outdoor living experience. The bathrooms boast marble mosaic showers in shades of sand and lapis lazuli, PETA-approved toiletries scented with Arabian oud, and wide mirrors to maximise natural light.

The intricate layers of these Desert Pool Villas establish a harmonious balance between the warm tones of the artefacts, textured surfaces, and fluted timber accents in the walls. Mesmerising views of the desert landscape enhance this composition, seamlessly connecting with the interior. Together, these elements—interior design, architecture, and art—merge to create a serene and understated atmosphere.

“We’re incredibly excited to unveil the Desert Pool Villas, which truly embody the heart and soul of Bab Al Shams. Guided by Kerzner International’s vision of curating exceptional places and experiences, these villas are more than just a new addition; they represent our dedication to creating immersive experiences that honour the rich heritage and natural beauty of the Arabian desert. With the launch of the villas, we are not only providing our guests with unparalleled privacy and comfort but also inviting them to escape, relax, and reconnect with nature through a curated blend of luxury, adventure, and wellness, whilst enjoying the warm hospitality that Bab Al Shams is known for.” says Jacques Le Roux, General Manager of Bab Al Shams.
