Helsinki Biennial announced

Helsinki will host its inaugural international contemporary art biennial in 2020.

To be located on Helsinki’s archipelago island of Vallisaari, a significant maritime location with a biodiverse eco-system, the inaugural edition of the Helsinki Biennial will be held from June 12 to September 27, 2020. With the goal of creating a platform to communicate the diverse and dynamic nature of the contemporary Finish art scene, the Biennial will address ongoing issues surrounding the evolving relationship between humanity and culture.

Maija Tanninen-Mattila, the biennial director  comments, “Helsinki is an open, welcoming city, which the Helsinki Biennial will mirror – opening up the Vallisaari island on the archipelago 24/7 to residents and visitors alike. We hope that this unique, informal setting will be a fruitful source of inspiration, bringing international art to locals, and creating more visibility for the art produced in Finland today.”
