Meshary AlNassar makes art from centuries-old mineral formations

First capsule collection of interior art inspired by a journey of form and function.

Kuwaiti Interior Architect Meshary AlNassar recently revealed his first capsule collection at Downtown Design, part of Dubai Design Week. The collection introduced unique designs inspired by his grandfather’s architectural masterpiece, as well as childhood centred around gracious gardens.

The pieces combine form, function and a history of natural formations from the precious stones of Ocean Travertino from Rapolano Terme, located within the Italian region of Tuscany.

The collection presented three stone sculptures named after their respective inspirations: ‘Radici’, from the roots of plants that prolong above the earth and stand tall to blend into spaces; ‘Tramonto’, inspired by warm sunlight setting on the horizon; and ‘Ulivo’, which takes its shape from the tenderness of an olive tree, and represents a reflection on peace and abundance within nature.

AlNassar says, “Radici, Tramonto and Ulivo deliver more than just aesthetically pleasing pieces that light up a modern space.

“They tell a story of the journey that inspired these naturally fitting designs. It is an exploration towards finding the unique material and the right craftsmanship to help translate my interior design approach, which is to build our surroundings more beautifully and engage our senses.”

All three pieces were crafted using a precious ocean blue Travertino formed over the years in the springs and basins of Rapolano Terme, which is home to unique quarries that have shaped ancient history and architecture, from Roman civilisations until today. Known for its quality to endure harsh weather conditions, the precious stone – also known as Silver Travertino – presents layered, multi-coloured veins formed by centuries of volcanic eruptions and the chemical reaction of limestone present in the waters.

Studio Meshary AlNassar has also produced a mini-documentary to share the full experience of making this collection, which can be viewed at mesharyalnassar.com

Formed in Kuwait in 2018, Studio Meshary AlNassar aims to “create one-of-a-kind living spaces that speak volumes upon first glance. A firm believer in the power of authenticity, Meshary is convinced that the most successful projects are a result of an open relationship, one that is based on collaboration, openness, and a willingness to go above and beyond.”
