Nestle – Powered by the Sun

UAE’s largest ground-mounted private solar plant generates renewable energy.

Nestle Middle East has launched the UAE’s largest ground-mounted private solar plant at its Al Maha factory in Dubai.  The 20,000 photovoltaic (PV) panels at three manufacturing sites will generate 7.2GWh of electricity per year while eliminating 4.5 million kilograms of CO2 emissions annually. The solar plant is part of DEWA’s Shams initiative encouraging building owners to install PV panels and connect them to DEWA’s grid.

“This is a real example of the positive effect of collaboration between the public and private sectors in renewable and clean energy, which will have a positive net effect of the environment as a whole locally and internationally,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director & CEO of DEWA.

One-third of Nestle’s 413 worldwide factories are already using 100% renewable electricity. The company will continue to increase the use of energy from renewable sources. Research and multi-sectoral partnerships are being developed to achieve the company’s goal of making 100% of their packaging recyclable or re-usable by 2025.

“We are determined to continue to play a positive role in the Middle East and contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. With our scale, and our actions, we can create a positive impact in society, and be a force of good,” said Yves Manghardt, Nestle Middle East Chairman and CEO.
