Dubai Design Week 2024's Forum brings together global design voices for thought-provoking discussion.
Dubai Design Week 2024 is set to build on the UAE’s reputation as a global design hub by featuring interactive installations, exhibitions, and the annual event, The Forum. The program will feature keynote speakers and live discussions that address industry topics such as sustainability, cultural identity, and innovation.
Beirut-based interior designer Thomas Trad was tasked with developing the design concept for the Forum. Known for his minimalist, Japanese-inspired approach, Thomas Trad designs feature organic and abstract shapes that emphasise materiality, texture, and finishings. His approach seamlessly integrates all these elements to provide the Forum with a cohesive, serene atmosphere.
“I’m honoured to be appointed to design The Forum for this year’s Downtown Design – an exciting opportunity to create a space where the design industry and creative community come together and engage in meaningful discussions and workshops, in a programme that aims to support the growth of the region’s thriving design scene and promote the great talent of the Middle East. Drawing inspiration from mid-century modern and Japanese aesthetics, I aim to craft an environment that is both intimate and visually striking. I’m looking forward to seeing how this space enhances the experience for all attendees.”
This year’s Forum promises a warm and inviting environment that will facilitate the main discussions of Dubai Design Week 2024. The space, which resembles an auditorium is draped in soft green fabric, contrasting beautifully with vibrant red chairs to establish a serene and comfortable setting. Natural light filters through a large circular opening fitted with amber-textured glass, creating a soft, sun-like warmth in the room.
India Mahdavi
India Mahdavi, noted for her dynamic combination of multicultural design and modern comfort, will be the class’s opening keynote speaker. Mahdavi will explore multicultural design and the merging of identities within contemporary spaces, setting the tone for an event full of thought-provoking discussions.
She will be joined by acclaimed architect Lina Ghotmeh and former identity awards jury member, whose work is praised for its cultural and environmental awareness, and Eames Demetrios, celebrated for his insights into design philosophy. The full program, scheduled for release in October, promises an impressive lineup of speakers and topics that reflect the diversity of the global design community.
By fostering conversations that bridge cultures and design, The Forum seeks to broaden perspectives and deepen understanding of how design is evolving across different contexts. It provides a space for meaningful dialogue and the exchange of fresh ideas on emerging trends, making it a key feature of Dubai Design Week.
