id50 2025 – Joakim de Rham

CEO and Co-founder at Swiss Bureau Interior Design (SBID) talks about the studio's vision and design achievements.

Can you let us know about the latest exciting projects that you are working on?

We are currently working on a diverse range of projects across various sectors. A few highlights: we are just finishing off offices projects across the UAE and Saudi Arabia, a 60’000 Sqft ultra luxurious residential project in Emirates Hills, a university innovation center, a couple of high-end clinics, a new hospitality build project in Dubai Creek Harbour as well as a coffee shop – we try to keep our portfolio as exciting and diversified as possible as you can see …

Please mention some of your proudest achievements as a firm (Top 3)

Firstly, the simple fact that Swiss Bureau has thrived in the region for over 22 years, since 2003, is a testament to our vision and resilience. Over these years, we’ve had the privilege of completing hundreds of projects across the UAE and beyond, each a unique expression of creativity and purpose.

Secondly, I must say, it’s deeply humbling to have been recognized with more than 20 awards and countless shortlists. Each recognition is not just a trophy—it’s a reminder of the dedication, passion, and brilliance our team pours into every project.

But my greatest achievement is not a single project but the incredible team we have built—a family of creative minds united by curiosity, passion, and the desire to create something extraordinary. Together, we truly inspire and challenge one another, always pushing boundaries and finding joy in the process. It’s this culture of trust, support and a shared vision that allows us to consistently deliver projects that are not just exceptional but meaningful. It’s proof that behind every great design is an even greater team: we just deliver exceptional projects by an exceptional team.

Can you talk about a type of project that you would like to take on in 2025 that would interest you and your team to pursue (dream project that you would like to manifest)?

It’s difficult to pinpoint just one type of project because all the spaces surrounding our existence are opportunities for design…

A dream project isn’t just one idea—it’s an endless journey of creation. Every space around us has the potential to become extraordinary. I personally dream of designing spaces that go beyond function, and spaces that feel alive and meaningful. Whether it’s a place to work, live, or simply exist, the goal is always to create something that connects deeply with people and enhances their experience. For me, every moment is an opportunity to dream, reimagine, and design something truly special.

How would you describe your ‘house style’ and design philosophy?

At Swiss Bureau, we don’t just design and build projects; we design and engineer them to reflect our creative DNA. I would say we are like a Swiss watch: every component is in perfect harmony with each other.

Our design philosophy is simply crafting timeless creations that authentically reflect the identity of our clients and most importantly ensuring they remain relevant and stylish for years to come. We carefully select finishes and FF&E that are less influenced by current trends, but rather emphasising on longevity and sophistication. At the heart of our approach lies the principle of “less is more,” embracing simplicity and elegance to achieve enduring and lasting beauty.

As this is the power issue, what empowers you and your team?

What empowers us, quite simply, is the ability to collaboratively transform spaces into something extraordinary —environments that inspire, elevate, and shape the way people work, live, and connect with one another. This is where design becomes more than aesthetics; it becomes life itself. Each project, no matter its size, is an adventure where our creativity and expertise and passion for excellence come together to solve challenges to craft unique and meaningful solutions.

When we witness how our designs improve lives and businesses, it reminds us of the power of design to transform not just spaces but the very quality of life itself. This is what drives us. Every day.
