id50 2025 – Godwin Austen Johnson (GAJ)

Insights by Jason Burnside, Managing Director – Partner

Can you let us know about the latest exciting projects that you are working on?

We are currently working on several exciting projects, including educational projects that are in the design stages, alongside an extension project. This year, we will be handing over the Serenia Living Residences, while also developing a new residential project in Jumeirah Islands. In addition, we are actively engaged in designing luxury boutique hotels and are excited to unveil an art museum project, further expanding our portfolio.

Please mention some of your proudest achievements as a firm (Top 3)

One of our proudest achievements is marking 35 years in the UAE. Being part of a region that has seen rapid growth and transformation, particularly in design, highlights the dedication and hard work our team has invested over the years. Our journey began with the iconic Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club project, which set the foundation for everything that followed.

Secondly, the Sharjah Art Museum project stands out as a remarkable achievement, earning the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture. Receiving such an accolade is a rare honour, as it represents a standard of excellence in preserving historic and landscape architecture. Receiving this award shows our commitment to designing while addressing the needs of communities and responding to their cultural expectations.

Lastly, I take great pride in the diversity of our team. We have been fortunate to bring together individuals from varied backgrounds who share a passion for honesty and dedication. Their willingness to support one another and contribute to projects with enthusiasm is something that truly deserves recognition.

Can you talk about a type of project that you would like to take on in 2025 that would interest you and your team to pursue (dream project that you would like to manifest)?

I am particularly drawn to projects that blend tradition with innovation, especially within the UAE’s culturally rich landscape. The region offers countless opportunities to explore the evolution of its architectural and cultural identity. In 2025, my team and I aim to focus on projects that do more than preserve history—they should inspire movement, progress, and exploration. We want to create spaces that honour traditional designs while embracing contemporary elements, enabling people to experience a narrative that spans from the past, through the present, and into the future.

How would you describe your ‘design philosophy?

My design philosophy focuses on innovation and exploration, with the goal of creating designs that are distinctive, functional, and purposeful. I place great importance on sustainability, incorporating eco-friendly principles to ensure our designs are impactful and responsible toward the environment. Additionally, I aim to design spaces that bring people together and offer comfort in their use.

As this is the power issue, what empowers you and your team?

What empowers me and my team is our collaborative and inclusive work environment, where everyone is encouraged to take on leadership roles and contribute meaningfully. Being involved in all stages of a project helps us explore new ideas and develop sustainable solutions. Working on recognised projects and expanding into regions like Saudi Arabia keeps us engaged and motivated. Our focus on creativity, professional growth, and creating meaningful designs ensures we continue to deliver impactful work.
