Designing the Desert After Dark

Set within the vast Al Wadi Desert, GOBI by DZ Design offers a refined interpretation of Bedouin nightlife, blending desert-inspired textures with subtle Asian influences.

DZ Design has completed GOBI at The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert, a new night-time dining and social destination that reimagines Bedouin nightlife through a contemporary design lens.

Conceptualised by LIVIT and delivered through DZ Design’s refined detailing and AOR services, the 10,100 sq ft venue translates “Bedouin nightlife” into an elevated, soulful experience infused with modern Asian influences. The studio played a pivotal role in validating the concept, developing the detailed design and acting as lead design consultant throughout delivery, ensuring the vision moved seamlessly from creative intent to built reality.

Set against the vast beauty of the Al Wadi Desert, GOBI unfolds as two interconnected worlds  indoor and outdoor designed for social connection, live entertainment and relaxed dining beneath the open sky. The atmosphere shifts naturally throughout the day, from soft desert afternoons to atmospheric evenings wrapped in warm light and music.

“Our aim was to reimagine Bedouin nightlife in a way that feels refined yet deeply connected to the desert’s spirit,” says Dina Murali, design director and co-founder of DZ Design. “GOBI blends earthy textures, handcrafted details and warm, sensory lighting with subtle Asian influences to create a space that evolves with the rhythm of the evening. It’s comforting, elegant, and designed to bring people together under the desert sky.”

The arrival sequence sets the tone. A timber-lined entrance framed by vertical screens, warm lighting and subtle planting creates a calm transition from resort to night-time retreat. Inside, dining zones are defined by materiality rather than walls. Clay-toned surfaces, carved timber detailing and patterned stone flooring establish a tactile base, while muted blues, warm greys and natural leather tones introduce depth without overpowering the palette.

Furniture is arranged to encourage relaxed social dining, with curved seating and low-backed chairs shaping an informal yet refined atmosphere. Minimalist lighting highlights architectural elements and shelving, allowing the mood to transition effortlessly from day to night.

As the interiors open towards the outdoors, materials, lighting and seating continue seamlessly, maintaining visual and experiential consistency.

“The design was always about responding to the site,” adds Murali. “Rather than competing with the desert, we allowed it to shape the experience. Material selection was critical, too. Every surface and piece of furniture was chosen for durability and comfort in extreme heat, while still feeling refined. Natural timbers, stone, woven finishes and robust upholstery were specified to age well, perform outdoors, and maintain their character over time.”

As a refurbishment within an operational resort, the project reflects DZ Design’s expertise in transforming hospitality spaces with sensitivity to context, operations and longevity reworking environments through thoughtful intervention rather than complete replacement.
