id Design Awards 2019 welcomes Alex Michaelis. The London-based architect was born in Paris, but during a trip to Italy realized he was meant to follow his father’s footsteps into architecture rather than studying medicine.

Partnering with Tim Boyd, the two young architects formed Michaelis Boyd where they push the boundaries of architecture to imaginatively respond to context. Stand out projects include Sandibe, a sustainable safari lodge in the Okavango Delta in North West Botswana; Arijiju, a private residence looking out onto Mount Kenya; five new residences at the prestigious Sugar Beach Resort in St Lucia; and La Croix Valmer, an expansive family home with views spanning Cap Lardier National Park in France

Current international projects include residences for Sugar Beach resort in St Lucia and Clubhouse by ZO. – a comprehensive suite of wellness, lifestyle and corporate amenities and services at Rockefeller Centre, New York.

A chartered member of RIBA, Michaelis is known for his creative, design-led, environmentally conscious design and building techniques. An advocate of solar energy he prefers as much natural light as possible. White plaster walls, clean lines, curves and wooden floors provide a calm palate inside to counter the chaos in the world.
