Guggenheim Abu Dhabi to open on December 11

After years of anticipation, the Frank Gehry-designed museum will welcome its first visitors on December 11, 2026

As the latest addition to Saadiyat Cultural District, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi joins institutions including Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi. Conceived as not just another Guggenheim outpost, the museum has been conceived as a platform for dialogue. Its programme will explore modern and contemporary art from the 1960s to the present through an Abu Dhabi lens, with a particular focus on artistic exchanges across West Asia, North Africa, South Asia and beyond. Rather than following a traditional chronological narrative, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will present interconnected stories that encourage visitors to discover relationships between artists, places and ideas.

Designed by the late Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry, the 80,000-square-metre museum occupies a prominent waterfront site on Saadiyat Island. Drawing inspiration from the architectural language of the Gulf, the building balances sculptural expression with environmental performance. Ten monumental cones define its distinctive skyline—nine wrapped in stainless steel mesh and one in onyx and glass, while also providing natural ventilation and shade, responding to Abu Dhabi’s climate.

Inside, visitors will move through 30 galleries arranged around a dramatic central atrium. The museum offers 11,600 square metres of gallery space alongside 23,000 square metres of outdoor exhibition areas, creating the scale and flexibility required for large contemporary installations, immersive commissions and experimental works. Here, architecture becomes part of the curatorial experience, extending the dialogue between art, space and audience.

What to expect

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi has been quietly assembling its collection since 2009, bringing together works that reflect a truly global perspective while remaining rooted in the region. Upon opening, visitors will encounter galleries organised around thematic ideas such as Abstractions, Popular Culture, Land, Language and Storytelling, rather than historical timelines, allowing multiple narratives to unfold simultaneously.

Alongside its permanent collection, the museum will present newly commissioned works, temporary exhibitions, research initiatives and multilingual public programming, positioning itself as both a cultural destination and an active platform for artistic production and exchange. Further details on the inaugural collection displays and commissioned works are expected to be announced in the coming months.

With its combination of ambitious architecture, global curatorial vision and regional perspective, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is set to become one of the most significant museum openings of the decade.
