From earning his Master’s in Architecture on a prestigious scholarship in Kyoto to shaping the future of Dubai’s urban fabric through pivotal roles (he currently serves as the Director of Urban Planning at Dubai Development Authority), Ahmed brings a unique perspective to design. As the founder of ARCHIDENTITY, he champions architecture that reflects cultural context while embracing modern expression. Recently Ahmad has also been part of the ‘Pillars of Arish’ symposium at this year’s Osaka Expo and is one of 9 judges selected by the Bureau International des Expositions as a jury member to pick the best pavillions at the expo. We speak to him about the parallels in the Japanese and Emirati ways of architecture, his connection to Japan, being one of the only firms to design the pavillions at Expo2020 and his journey.

For our second episode of ‘In Design With’, we take a break from our podcast studio and are at Gerbou – a space that lives and breathes Emirati hospitality, which is a product of a beautiful design collaboration. Set within a villa from the 1980s and right next to the Dubai-based incubator for art and design Tashkeel, Gerbou means ‘welcome to my humble abode’ in Emirati Arabic. The restaurant stands apart not only for its design but for showcasing the power of collaboration, with various bespoke design pieces crafted in partnership with the Tashkeel design community and other local designers.

Joining us on the show are Sheikha Lateefa Bint Maktoum, founder of Tashkeel Studio and Gerbou, and Kristina Zanic, the founder of Kristina Zanic Consultants, the interior design consultants on this stunning project. In our debut episode of ‘In Design With’, we are in conversation with Dariush Zandi, an architect and founder of the cultural and artistic oasis, The Courtyard in Al Quoz. We take you down memory lane of Dariush’s incredible 40 years in Dubai. Working closely with Dubai Municipality, his work has included the restoration of historical buildings and their conversion into museums – such as the Naif Fort and Dubai Museum. Dariush is the former Chairman of The UAE Architectural Heritage Society English Chapter also created urban masterplans for Dubai and worked on projects for landmarks such as Sheikh Saeed House, Safa Park, and Mushrif Park, making him a vital part of the city’s architecture & design fabric.
